- Summary:
- We often associate the 1st July 1867 at the time of Confederation, the new country's birthday. But the process was just beginning in 1867. From the small dominion with limited borders, the country has become a much larger federation, made up of ten provinces, three territories and hundreds of indigenous communities. Politicians have long debated the notion of country and have prudently weighed the pros and cons of joining the Canadian Confederation. Confederation, 1864-1999: New Perspectives, brings together a number of leading scholars from Canada's history whose aim is to pay renewed attention to how the provinces, territories, and treaty-prone regions have acquired their current forms. In partnership with The Debates of Confederation , a non-partisan, non-partisan, participatory production project to digitize Canada's founding documents, this innovative work integrates treaties between Aboriginal peoples and the Crown, in order to inform the creation and expansion of the Canadian Confederation. In doing so, the book reveals the tumultuous, complex and evolving history of each province and territory.
