- Summary:
- This is a manuscript responsum document which was composed with a formal Halakhic inquiry from Turin and sent to various authorities to add to (and likely then returned to Turin or Vercelli). The inquiry details how Ḥaburat ha-miḳra, a confraternity in Vercelli, created their distinct custom of reciting verses and piyutim between the congregation's recitation of Lekha dodi and Psalm 93 on occasional Friday evenings, disturbing the liturgical order; the author's nephew, Yechiel Treves (then rabbi in Vercelli) wrote an earlier letter which is retold here; the original query was brought to Treves by a prominent philanthropist, Elija E. Foa (died 1796)) who prohibited all piyutim on Friday evenings unless they precede the prayers by one hour; the author harshly denigrates piyutim in the segment ("מתנשאים לפני עמי הארץ ... גס בלא דעת ומכבים אורו של תורה"); the author approved and signs following the text (f. 1v). Additional responses from Elijah ben Raphael Solomon Ha-levi (known as Elia De Veali, Alessandra, 1780, in his hand), Yeʼosha Margalit (Nice in Provence, 1780, recorded by the Livornese rabbis), and a rejoinder from Livorno Rabbis, Yaʻaḳov Nunes Vais and Eliyahu Hacohen (f. 2r). A subsequent bifolium is attached with an argument in concession by Meʼir Sanguinetti (f. 3r-v).
