Summary:

This is a manuscript copy of the "Organisationsgesetz", the 1824 reorganization of the Jewish communities of Endingen and Lengnau in Switzerland (these villages in the Canton of Aargau were the two Swiss villages which had a Jewish population during the 17th and 18th centuries; the 1824 law granted certain autonomies and rights of domicile in Endingen and Lengnau, though not the Canton of Aargau). The first part is a section of provisions (f. 2r-5v) and the second two items are charters (f. 8r-9r, 11r-12r). Among the organizational laws are the building of schools, allowance for a synagogue, governance and courts, and rabbinical jurisdiction. Written in a formal German cursive script (Kurrentschift) in a secretarial hand; opening in calligraphy (f. 2r). Seals of the Canton of Aargau (f. 9r, 12r), signature of the Aargau burgermeister J. Rothpletz (Johann Heinrich Rothpletz; f. 5v, 9r, 12r). Bound in green boards (likely original); stain on front.
