Summary:
This cookbook contains around 230 recipes and was written and compiled by Hannah Ffarington in Lancashire, England between 1806 and 1827. The volume is bound in quarter leather with marbled paper boards. There are several recipes pasted in, both newspaper clippings and handwritten by others (p. 46-47, 58, 60, 62, 65-67, 128, 143-146, 150, 154-155).The recipes in this volume are mostly culinary, and many are attributed to other individuals. There are several cost-effective and economical recipes. Several of the recipes are crossed out, some with notes such as “not good” (p. 14). At the end of the volume are lists of dishes for certain courses (p. 156-159) and an alphabetical index (p. 160-178). Examples of recipes in this volume include ratafia (p. 6), currie Mrs. Maccory (p. 11), crocketts Mrs. Maccory (p. 16), posset (p.23), Prussian soup – the Queen brought this to England (p. 25), to smoak hams the Westmoreland way Miss Hubberty (p. 40), economy bread Reverend F. Haggitt (p. 47), capata a Sicilian tart (p. 57), excellent biscuits Mrs. Hoskinson Golden Hill (p. 61), Everton taffy (p. 63), agras (agraz) (P. 71), a macaroni pie Maltese dish (p. 73), Chinese method of making tea (p. 88), to candy angelica (p. 107), soup Lorraine (p. 111), soup à la bonne femme (p. 113), wings of fowls à la St. Lawrence (p. 113), a bride’s pie (p. 138), meat lozenges (p. 147), and Indian sauce (p. 150).
