- Summary:
- Can a Catholic be a feminist? In his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae, Pope Saint John Paul II called for Catholics to embody a "new feminism," a radical new view of women's dignity. Former Cosmopolitan writer Sue Ellen Browder echoes this call in Sex and the Catholic Feminist. Browder uncovers why the pro-life thread of feminism in America has been ignored by the media and left out of public conversation for fifty years. While tracing the history of feminism in America, Browder reveals the core of the various feminist movements: a desperate search for personhood. Browder ultimately concludes placing one's identity anywhere other than in God will prove disappointing and unfulfilling. As Pope Saint John Paul II reminded us in Evangelium Vitae, a person "is recognized and loved because of the dignity which comes from being a person and not from other considerations, such as usefulness, strength, intelligence, beauty or health." Browder shows that feminism rooted in this truth is authentic feminism, a feminism we all ought to reclaim and celebrate. Book jacket.
