By Daniel Featley.
A reply to attacks on Featley in "Mercurius Britanicus", "Mercurius Civicus", and various other political periodicals.
The words "Britan. Civicus" are enclosed in brackets on title page.
Not in fact a second edition of "Sacra nemesis, the Levites scourge" as stated by Wing, but a reissue of Wing F593 with a London counterfeit printing of "The gentle lash" added at the end. This latter printing (Wing F584) was never issued separately and appeared only as part of F594. Cf. Madan, II, 1668, 1669. The title page is in the same setting of type as F593 but includes an extra line in italic type just above the imprint reading "Whereunto is added the gentle lash".
"The gentle lash" has separate dated title page with "Imprinted at Oxford [i.e. London], 1644"; pagination and register are separate. In this edition of "The gentle lash" C2r line 1 begins "For 2s per li.".
"Spongia: or, Articles exhibted by certaine semi-separatists" (caption title) is part 2 of "The gentle lash" and begins pagination on B1r.
"The gentle lash" is cataloged separately as Wing F584 on reel 960.
Reproductions of the originals in the Cambridge University Library ("Early English books, 1641-1700", reel 960) and the Bodleian Library (reel 1947).
