Summary:
In the present book, architect Cortés Rocha analyzes and reinterprets the 18th century anonymous manscript "Architectura Mechanica" on how architects, especially in the 18th century, tried to claim the character of their profession as a liberal, scientific and artistic art. This treatise presents the development of the forms of the architectural exercise, the measurement systems, length, surface, volume and weight, the construction materials, the different actors in the process and the possible authors are examined. "The author of "Architectura Mechanica" regreted that, being architecture a liberal art, it was considered mechanical art, subject to extra-labor obligations that he considered infamous of such a profession, such as carrying an image in the (religious) procession or the fact that the guild (gremio) should be part of the viceregal militia and be subject to the militarized regime in case of war." (HKB Translation) --Page 26. The original document is part of the collections of the Reserved Fund of the National Library of Mexico and due to its historical importance, its access is restricted.
