本书将从长期搜集的大量西文史料和清末民国外交档案入手, 在进一步对相关档案, 史志舆图进行补充搜集的基础上, 首先对近代来华西方科学考察团体和人士进行统计, 分析;其次结合典型个案, 分类对近代西方人在西北内陆的科考活动及其影响进行综合, 比较研究;再通过实地考察印证, 补充各类史料, 撰写专题论文和专著.本书的基本观点是:近代西方人在西北内陆的科考活动并非单纯的科学实践活动, 而是一种带有殖民主义色彩的复杂社会活动, 对西北地区的文物, 古迹, 化石, 珍稀动植物资源等造成了较大破坏;但在科学考察和成果传播过程中, 近代西方人也起到了连接西北内陆与西方世界的桥梁作用, 其活动不仅对西北内陆社会产生了微妙影响, 对我国多学科人才培养和民众文物保护意识的觉醒等有所推动, 而且对于西方世界相关学科发展, 近代科学知识在世界范围内的交流, "中国观"的形成与传播等也产生了深远影响.
