Biography/History:
Lithuanian rabbi and rosh yeshivah (also known as Shelomoh Parycher, born in Parychy near Minsk), student of Baruch Ber Leibowitz in the Yeshivat Keneset Bet Yitsḥaḳ, then in Vilijampolė in Lithuania and of Israel Meir Kagan in Radun; taught in the yeshivas of Kremenchuk, Smalyavichy (Smolovich in Yiddish), and Baranavichy, afterwords emigrating to the United States in 1935 as rosh yeshivah of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath, Brooklyn, New York.
Summary:
Contract letter for hire of Shelomoh Haiman to the rabbinate of Vornyany, Belarus (Varnian in Yiddish; spelled ווארניאן in this manuscript), signed by forty laypeople of the village, and then signed by the outgoing rabbi Dovber Greyzel with his blessing to the new rabbi (verso; "והנני מברך את הרב הגאון ר' שלמה היימאן בברכה משולשת ..."); slots for fifty-six signatures are provided, indicating the amount of laypeople in Vornyany at the time. The terms of the contract included ruling on ritual and business matters, two sermons per year (שבת שובה ושבת הגדול), and to lead studies in the mornings and evenings; in return, he would be given an annual salary of 25$ and the sole rights to sell yeast and candles to the Jewish community. Written in a Lithuanian-Ashkenazic cursive script; autographs in various inks; written on commercial lined paper, folded, torn, and taped.
