- Summary:
- Contract letter for hire of Shelomoh Haiman to the rabbinate of Vornyany, Belarus (Varnian in Yiddish; spelled ווארניאן in this manuscript), signed by forty laypeople of the village, and then signed by the outgoing rabbi Dovber Greyzel with his blessing to the new rabbi (verso; "והנני מברך את הרב הגאון ר' שלמה היימאן בברכה משולשת ..."); slots for fifty-six signatures are provided, indicating the amount of laypeople in Vornyany at the time. The terms of the contract included ruling on ritual and business matters, two sermons per year (שבת שובה ושבת הגדול), and to lead studies in the mornings and evenings; in return, he would be given an annual salary of 25$ and the sole rights to sell yeast and candles to the Jewish community. Written in a Lithuanian-Ashkenazic cursive script; autographs in various inks; written on commercial lined paper, folded, torn, and taped.
