Biography/History:
Russian-born cantor; studied music in Odessa and Königsberg (Brandenburg, Germany); while holding a position in Riga, Latvia, his son Julius Moses Rogoff was born in 1884; emigrating to the United States at some time after that, he held positions in New York City, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh before becoming the cantor at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Detroit no later than 1903. Identify with the author of Musical compositions, held at Brandeis University, based on the 1954 copyright application by Julius M. Rogoff, editor, author cataloged as Rosoff, Moses, 1851-1925.
Summary:
One of a set of six part books for synagogue choir, one of which (Alto no. 2) has a pencil note inside the back cover reading, "All music in this book was composed by Rev. Moses R. Rogoff." Fore edge halves of covers are missing. Partial label remains on front cover with the beginning of the word Bass in ink. Partial table of contents in pencil and two signatures of J. M. Rogoff in ink inside front cover; numerous signatures of J. M. Rogoff in pencil, end flyleaf recto. A few songs have titles written in Hebrew characters in addition to or instead of romanized titles, including one on an additional leaf (sewn in after p. 12). Pagination in pencil (blue pencil p. 68-98), upper outer corners, 1-12, [i-ii], 13-98, [99-100]. Occasional markings for solos and cantor (for example, p. 55-56).
