Summary:
A leather bound volume comprising copied passages, poems, and quotations along with dried flowers kept by Ellen Turner spanning the years from 1847 to 1860. The commonplace book kept by Turner contains chiefly excerpts from the works of nineteenth century writers and philosophers. Many passages have themes of religion and nature. Some of the passages are attributed to Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Elizabeth Missing Sewell. There are a few poems in the volume including Persian cyclamen and The birdies of song. The second portion of the volume begins with a child's hymn: Hymn of the Trinity followed by dried flowers. Two floral arrangements are pasted on two leaves dated April 1860. Turner noted they were from her child's death. A portion of the remainder of the volume has dried flower specimens laid in. Written on first page verso: Ellen Turner, History, February 1847.
