Summary:
Published a year and a half after an international conference on Crete took place at Montpellier, this book presents the principal results of this meeting and its works. All written or translated in French, some 20 original articles are dealing with the history of the largest Egean Island from the Ancient Times up to the XXth Century. Three major themes organize this book: the natural and cultural symbols and features of Cretan common and subaltern identities; the western learned representations of Creta; the political, religious and strategic importance of an insular frontier and place of arms in the past struggles for the supremacy over the Eastern Mediterranean.
