Summary:
"In 2001, the East Bay Pride celebration in Oakland, California included the first publicly staged "Homohop Festival." The program showcased the work of queer hip-hop artists from throughout the United States, and was called Peace Out. Under the direction of Juba Kalamka, Peace Out has become an annual hip-hop event, inspiring similar festivals across the county."--Title screens. Shot over a three-year period, the film traces the beginning and the intertwining relationships of San Francisco's queer hip hop music scene of the early '90s through performances as recent as 2005. These gay, lesbian, and transgender artists and producers use hip-hop music in the same mode with which it began: to express their discontent with their lives, and document the struggles of their communities. Since rap began, it has been a medium from which gay and lesbian performers and fans have often felt alienated--because of it's widespread misogyny and anti-gay rhetoric. These stories, from the Bay Area to Houston to New York City, resonate far beyond the music industry and queer communities, reminding viewers of the surprising resiliency of the human spirit.
