- Summary:
- This first biography of the influential Irish poet and gallery curator moves from his origins in non-conformist Belfast through his local education, early efforts at writing, the left-wing politics of the 1930s and war years to his final days of retirement back in his native city. It is based on original and detailed archival research into Hewitt's manuscripts, literary and personal. Chapters are devoted to Hewitt's interest in regionalism, his professional disappointments, his fifteen-year 'exile' to Coventry's Herbert Art Gallery, the onset of 'the Troubles', and the prolific last years.
