- Summary:
- This book investigates the self-perception and self-fashioning of the rabbis of Late Antiquity within a non-Jewish social and intellectual world. Rabbinic depictions of non-Jews interacting with rabbis are a window into how the rabbis viewed both non-Jews and themselves. Despite the highly internal and self-referential nature of rabbinic Torah study, some rabbis indeed imagined the involvement of non-Jews in rabbinic intellectual culture as an enriching aspect of the rabbis' own learning and teaching.
