- Summary:
- "This volume discusses ambition, love, and politics in France during 1848–1945. It is hoped that this may serve to throw some light on the question of how the French differed from other nations in this period. But it is believed that the role of the intellectuals is something that particularly needs to be studied in France, as a basis for getting beyond the confusing and interminable conflicts of which its history seems to be composed. For not only have the intellectuals played a leading part in these conflicts, but they have also interpreted and labelled them in such a way as to influence all subsequent thought about them."-- Title details screen.
