Summary:
Film about a Czech engineer and his dramas in postwar Czechoslovakia. Dejected engineer Jaroslav Král has not joined in the efforts to rebuild Czechoslovakia following the Communist takeover in February 1948, and has been relocated to the Research Institute archives. The chairwoman of the Institute's Communist party committee, Lída Jostová, wants to help Král and invites him to join an important research project. However, before he can consider this, Král is visited unexpectedly by his former friend Weber, who had previously defected to West Germany but moves in with Král without explanation. When Weber is murdered, Král is arrested as a suspect. Once in prison, he is able to take up work once again on a revolutionary engineering project, with the help of Jostová.
