Historical drama set in Nazi Germany. Based on a novel by Eva Lippold, this film follows the daily life of a political prisoner after she is arrested for participating in Communist activities. Drawing inspiration from real events, this East German drama follows prisoner Hella Lindau throughout the course of her ten-year sentence, examining her relationships with the other inmates and wardens. Throughout illness, depredation and hard labour, Hella is sustained by her love for her fiancée, Hermann, a member of the communist resistance. Includes brief archive footage of a Nazi rally, where thousands line the streets and children hang from lampposts, and scenes of triumphant German soldiers marching to war and engaging in battle.
