- Summary:
- Criticisms of Mao's rule by Soviet filmmakers. This unique documentary begins with the script writer, Alexander Medyevkin, discussing how his film "Night Over China" was received poorly by communists in Paris and Germany. This film, he explains, is his response to them. The documentary opens with a criticism of Mao's militaristic tendencies, which are illustrated with his quotes on welcoming nuclear war. It is also stated that China wants to expand it's territory. Footage includes Chinese soldiers in training and tests of atomic bombs and is contrasted to Western Powers agreeing limits on armaments at Helsinki. Russia's historic peasant culture is contrasted to Soviet mechanisation and industrialisation, and compared to China's present system. Includes Mao's denials of Soviet-Chinese partnerships and assistance, and highlights meetings between Mao and Western leaders. The films also includes shots of Mao meeting German politician, Franz Josef Strauss, and suggests that China is allying with NATO, Pinochet, Rabin, Douglas-Home, Holden Roberto, General Spinola, Italian neo-fascist Giorgio Almirante, and South Africa against communism.
