Film following Gorbachev as he visits various cities in the Soviet Far East in order to address the region's socio-economic problems. The Soviet leader visits cities in the Khabarovsk Krai and Primorsky Krai. Footage shows Gorbachev meeting with the public, asking questions, inspecting local industry and delivering speeches. The nuclear threat is also addressed, with Gorbachev warning of the dangers of building militarism in the Pacific, and proposing a Helsinki-style peace conference for Asia and the Pacific to take place in Hiroshima. Footage also includes Gorbachev awarding Vladivostok the Order of Lenin, Navy Day in USSR at Vladivostok, a visit to Vostochny Port, and a discussion between Gorbachev and Komsomolsk residents about the key issues facing the city, including lack of foods, clothing supplies, schools and housing which make it difficult for families to settle there.
