- The (fictional) experiences of Gregor Hecker, a German-born Lieutenant in the Red Army on the outskirts of Berlin during the last days of the war. Hecker, who fled to Moscow with his family as a refugee in 1934, returns to his homeland as a Red Army officer. The film charts the final weeks of the Second World War on the Eastern Front; Hecker encourages the remnants of the German army to surrender, appoints new local officials, and surveys the Holocaust. The film also includes archival footage of a former 'Hangman' at Sachsenhausen explaining the means of killing its prisoners, and characters discussing the German national character.
