- Biography/History:
- Thomas Pearson (T.G. Pearson) was a sergeant in the East India Company Army, 2nd Bombay Regiment of the European Light Infantry. He traveled with new recruits from Gravesend, England, to Bombay, East India on July 31, 1849, and arrived in Bombay on November 28, 1849. He appears to have been in Bombay in December before sailing to Belgaum before the end of the year. According to the remarks column in the list of recruits (p. 5), Pearson may have been transferred out of the company in 1853.
- Summary:
- This volume begins with an account of Pearson's service in the 2nd Bombay Regiment from July to December, 1849 (p. 1-2); a list of all the recruits sailing from England to Bombay on the shop Dartmouth (p. 2-12); a list of rules of conduct (p. 12); a list of useful words in English and Hindustani (p. 13-20); and Hindustani verbs (p. 105-110). The remainder of the volume is filled with Pearson's writings on a variety of topics (the moral code, drunkenness, pride, and passion, as examples). Each topic is headed by calligraphic and decorative headings, some of which are in color. Many of the headings appear to have been inspired by religion. The volume is bound in quarter leather, with peeling paper boards, damaged spine, and tattered and brittle pages. At the end of the volume, a pedigree chart from 1999 is laid in, which includes birth and death dates for Thomas George Storr Pearson.
