A Soviet account of the 1978 April Revolution (the Saur Revolution) during which the communists took power in Afghanistan. Afghanistan under Soviet rule is compared to the poverty, drought and hard conditions in the country before 1978, in an attempt to counter Western claims that the Soviet Union was suppressing the Afghan people. The film explores the actions of counter-revolutionaries and bandit attacks, CIA activities, chemical warfare against the Afghan people, and the developments in industry, education and agriculture since the revolution.
