- Summary:
- First part of a two-part documentary tracing the history of the Soviet Union from the Tsarist era to the launch of Vostok One. [WARNING: images of death and execution]. Opening with footage of Yuri Gagarin, this film features archive scenes of Tsar Nicholas II and the Romanov family which are juxtaposed with images of back-breaking labour by the peasant classes. Later topics include the Lena goldfield massacre of 1912, the exile of revolutionaries, the Russian Revolution and Civil War, international intervention, the famine of 1921-22, industry, the first Soviet car, Subbotniks and large-scale construction projects.
