The story of the famous Russian fighter pilot Alexey Maresyev who, in 1942, was shot down by the Nazis in the Black Forest. After crawling through the forest for 18 days, Maresyev was rescued and taken to hospital where, suffering from gangrene, his feet were amputated. Driven by a desire to continue serving as a fighter pilot, he learns to walk again with artificial feet. Based on the novel by Boris Polevoy. Includes scenes of aerial combat.
