Summary:
This volume presents a new translation of the Athenian Constitution, presented under the authorship of Pseudo-Xenophon as the real author remains unknown. This first known text of Attic prose contributes above all to the study of political thought in 5th century BC Athens. It is a dense, though partial, text, which defends both oligarchic and democratic interests in turn as regards the social organization of Athens. This was, of course, the city that first developed and exported the model of democracy, later consolidated as one of the most important political legacies that Classical Greece bequeathed to the contemporary world.
