Summary:
A silent film with intertitles showing the defence of Madrid during the Spanish Civil War. The film is in three parts: 'The Assault on a People'; 'The Defence of Liberty' and 'The World Assists.' Part one uses maps, with arrows and simple graphics, to explain the rebellion of the Fascist generals and the defence of democracy by the people. There is a captioned interview with Eleanor Rathbone. The film then cuts to Madrid and daily life. The bulk of what remains is given over to images of the aftermath of air raids, which are described as 'Franco contributes to civilisation.' Part two opens with posters calling for resistance and attacking the horrors of Nazism and Fascism. Leaders of the resistance and trucks of recruits are shown, as are the building of barricades and air raid shelters. Recruitment, equipping and the training of the People's Army, and images from the front line follow. Part two ends with the evacuation of civilians and those who remain waiting for supplies in food queues. Part three begins with crowds of people in the Soviet Union calling for the country to send food to the people of Spain, which is duly done. Medicine and medical work at the only hospital still standing in Madrid is also shown. There is a captioned interview with Christopher Addison, which is then followed by a look at the international battalions. With shots across the front line, the film ends with a call to arms, saying this is not just Spain's fight, but a fight for the whole world, for democracy and liberty; and it is a fight that will be won by those forces of good.
