Summary:
The meeting "Symmetries and Older Algebraic Methods in Many-Body Systems" was held in honor of Professoi Francesco lachello. on the occasion of hisietuement, on 5-6 Octobei 2018 at Sloane Physics Laboiatcny. Yale University in New Haven. CT The two-day symposium was hosted by Yale's Wnght Laboiatoiy, the Depaitment of Physics, and the Department of Chemistry, and consisted of talks and conversations on topics to which Franco made significant contributions, spanning fields broadly categorized as Nuclear Structure, Molecular arid Hachcanc Structure. Neutnno Physics andDouble Beta Decay. andSymmetnesand Phase Transitions. Franco is an insightful and creative scholar who has had a significant impact mmany different areas of science and mathematics It was an honor for us to host many of his former and current students, postdocs. collaborators. colleagues, friends, and, most importantly, his family for the celebration back at Yale It is evident that he touched the scientific, professional, and personal lives of many The rmpact of his science has helped shape many fields His scientific legacy, community and friendships will endure for generations to come Franco's studies of symmetiiei in physics through the much-celebrated lntroduchon of models based on symmetry and their application to physical systems, including the interacting boson model, dynamical supeisymmetry, vibion model of molecules, and their extensions, have endured the test of time The meeting was a lepiesentation of lus lifetime of work guided by las inaghts, imagination, brilliance, and enthusiasm It follows a senes of previous meetings held in Prof lachello's honor' "Beauty in Physicr Theory and Experiment" held rn Hacienda Cocoyoc, Mexico fiom 14-IS May 3012, "Symmetries ui Nuclear Structure" rn Ence. Italy. 23-30 March 2003. and "Symmetnes in Science VII Spectrum Generating Algebras and Dynamic Symmetries mPhyacs" inNugata, Japan on2S-31,1992 This volume of the AIP Conference Proceedings contains manuscnpts of the invited talks and contnbuted papers, as well as a summary of Franco's biography, his publicabcms, and remarks by Prof lachello's son, Giovanni lachello The progiam was organized into sessions on Nuclear Structure. Molecular and Hadrorac Structure. Neutnno Physics andDouble Beta Decay, and Symmetries andPhase Transition*. We wish to thank the colleagues, friends, and family for their participation in the symposium as well as for cmibibutuig proceedings foi this volume, and extend our special thanks to the Coufeieuce Oigamzeis, Mark Capua Roelof Bijker, and Baha Balantekin in helping to set the agenda for the meeting, and the Local Organizing Committee, Helen Caines, Rick Casten, Bonnie Fleming JohnHarns, Karsttn Heeger. and David Mooie for their help in the local scientific programming and logjshcs We would also like to acknowledge Peter Schrffer. Vice Provost for Research and Piofessoi of Applied Physics and Physics at Yale, Paul Tipton, Chair of Yale Department of Physics, and Karsten Heeger. Director of Wnght Laboratory for their support for the meebng end providing lnrioductoiy remarks at the Symposium We extend special thanks to Victoria Misenii and Catherine Baiabas for their professional support in the logistics and organization of the symposium at Yale, in coordinating and managing the program, and their help in collecting and editing these proceedings I gal Talim. a long-term collaborator and friend of Franco, was unable to attend nor contribute to the proceedings due to health issues, but wrote a note that encompasses how he and all those who have been touched by Franco might feel: "I would like to send you my best wishes for years of research and accomplishments like the significant ones that you have already made Best wishes foi good health and much happuiess I would like to use this occasion to express my gratitude for having the privilege of past collaborations with you Chana joins me in wishing you all the best With great appreciation andwerm friendship, Igal" We wish Franco well as he goes into hisietuement from Yale As is true of many great minds, we expect that his retirement lsonlytobeftomhisadinirustrabve duties at the University and that Ins scientific output will continue to flourish as it always has We look forward to our continued scientific discussions and progress, and the scientific community will no doubt continue to benefit from his brilliance, kindness, generosity, creativity and wisdom.
