They may be substituted by other mechanical effects, or vocal sounds, according to the performer's discretion (e.g., "electronic toy" on page 9 could be gibberish.) If the keyboard lid cannot be slammed or is not loud enough, the pianist should find another way of making a sudden loud noise. The fermata at the top of page 34 is an age in itself, either entirely silent, or with occasional noises ad lib (toys, bird calls, etc., as before, or entirely new sounds).
