Summary:
"The purpose of this book is to present some picture of society in its relations to the individual. I feel most earnestly that a diffusion of psychological knowledge is a necessary prelude to an intelligent social progress, and I believe such diffusion to be possible. Psychology is founded on common sense and has, therefore, a universal appeal; that it is useful need deter no one, for it is also entertaining--not "dry." No one volume can more than touch upon the great mass of material which presents, but, following the excellent example of milord of Montaigne, what I can not here find room for, "the same I point at with my finger." My hope is, as in a former volume, to set thought going and thereby to arouse interest in this which has seemed to many the most important of all human studies"--Preface.
