- "In this book on general child psychology the author has attempted to present an up-to-date survey representative of the present status of child study. No particular systematic emphasis has been placed on the experimental data, since such a treatment would necessarily be obliged, from the logical point of view, to deal with topics of little interest to the reader and to exclude, in some cases, contributions which seem significant. Hence, the treatment has been more or less eclectic. While reader interest has been one of the foremost considerations determining the nature of the material included, for the sake of completeness certain other valuable contributions of child data also have been incorporated. This was done in order to round out the discussion at various points in the manuscript. The data presented include many of the most recent and significant objective studies which have appeared in the literature concerning the physiological and psychological study of the child. Many of the earlier monumental studies have been included both for the excellence and clarity of their contributions as well as for their value as historical material, an appreciation of which is essential to the attainment of a better perspective of the source materials which later came to inspire much significant research"--Preface.
