- Summary:
- This is a collection of manuscripts of sermons (derashot) for occasions during the year; the inscriptions on the verso of each item indicate that the sermons were delivered on their corresponding Sabbaths and holidays. They were written and delivered in Asti, a small city in the Piedmont region in Northwest Italy; it was known as one of the Kehilot APaM (קהלות אפ"ם; Asti, Fossano, and Moncalvo), a trio of communities with Provençal influence. The first item is a sermon delivered on Shemini ʻatseret (the last day of Sukkot before the holiday of Simḥat Torah) 589 (Tuesday, 30 September 1828), and it begins with Ecclesiastes 1:2, following the Sefardic custom to read Ecclesiastes on Shemini ʻatseret. Following is a sermon for Sukkot, delivered also in 1828; it is titled "ba-Sukot teshvu" and begins with a portion of the Talmud (Sukah 45a-b). The third item is a sermon for the Sabbath Torah portion of Noaḥ 1828 and begins with Genesis 6:10. Item 4 is a discourse on Hanukkah, with portions of the opening in Italian explaining themes of the Hanukkah miracle; item 5 is a sermon about the Song of the Sea (Exodus 15:1). Item 6 is a sermon for the Shabat zakhor (after the halakhah requiring the reading of verses in Deuteronomy 25 after the traditional Torah reading) and is written on the topics of ʻAmaleḳ and the Purim miracle; item 7 is a funeral sermon, beginning with Genesis 7:1, delivered on the week of the Torah portion of Noaḥ 1829. Item 8 is a sermon for Shavuʻot, delivered in 1829, called "Segulah mi-kol ha-ʻamim" (Exodus 19:5) and opens with the Mishnah, Avot 5:22. Items 1-3, and 6-7 written in Hebrew in Italian cursive script in long lines around Italian sentences, which were possibly written earlier on paper being reused for the sermons; items 5 and 8 written in Hebrew in Italian cursive script; the text of item 4 is in both Hebrew and Italian.
