Reproduction of the original from the American Antiquarian Society.
This weekly miscellany was a major rival for Sear's New Pictorial Family Magazine and sold for three cents. Its contents included a juvenile department, poetry, literary notices, recipes, biography, news and articles on geography and travel, archaeology, botany, and zoology. Wood engravings served for illustration. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

A compilation re-issue of three consecutive weekly periodical titles originally published Feb. 8, 1845-Dec. 25, 1847: Dwight's American magazine and family newspaper; American penny magazine and family newspaper and Dwight's American magazine. Also reissued in monthly compilations.
