- Using essays on agriculture previously published in the United States and Europe combined with original contributions of eminent farmers and statesmen, the Journal of Agriculture promoted agricultural improvements. Eclectic in nature, the magazine featured articles on farming in foreign countries and the U.S., biographies, farm management, plant and stock diseases, agricultural machines, insects and botany and geology as applied to farming. One of the featured accounts was by George Washington to Sir John Sinclair describing the agricultural advantages of the United States in 1796. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
