At least two variant issues of Vol. 1, no. 2 were published; this one with an announcement of the second edition on the verso of the issue title page and one with an announcement of the third edition on the verso of the title page.
At least two variant issues of Vol. 1, no. 5 were published, with different portraits of John C. Calhoun. In this one the artist's name appears under the chair on which Calhoun is leaning. Publisher information appears at the bottom of the page. In the other the artist's name appears on one of the carpet squares under the pile of books. There is no publisher's information at the bottom of the page.

The Monthly historical register was issued at the end of numbers 2, 3, 7, 10, 11, 15, 16, 19, 26, 27, and 36. In most cases there is a section title page; in some numbers there is not. The Monthly historical register has its own pagination. This was intended to be removed and bound separately from the United States magazine and democratic review. Thus, vols. 1-3, 5-8 contain the political and literary portions; v. 4 the historical register department, of the numbers published from Oct. 1837 to Dec. 1840.
The United States monthly advertiser was issued as an advertising sheet of the United States magazine and Democratic review. It was printed on yellow paper and has its own pagination.
At least four numbered editions of volumes 1-3 were issued, as well as a stereoetype edition.

American Antiquarian Society Copy 1 is a made-up set with various binding styles. The portrait of John Calhoun in no. 5 cropped with loss of text at bottom.
