- William P.Farrand was editor of this missionary magazine throughout its years of publication. Published under the patronage of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, the Intelligencer featured biographical sketches of Presbyterian ministers, many of them accompanied by portraits. In addition to the biographies, it presented accounts of missions and missionary societies, along with other religious news, moral and religious essays and anecdotes, studies of Bible passages, lists of new religious publications, and some poetry.
