The Magnolia was begun in 1840 in Macon, Georgia, as the Southern Ladies' Book, a Methodist miscellany and parlor magazine. Abandoned in this form after ten months, it was taken to Savannah, and its name changed in 1841 to Magnolia; or, Southern Monthly. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
