This weekly miscellany was a major rival for Sear's New Pictorial Family Magazine and sold for three cents. Its contents included a juvenile department, poetry, literary notices, recipes, biography, news and articles on geography and travel, archaeology, botany, and zoology. A compilation of the three consecutive weekly periodical titles, Dwight's American magazine and family newspaper; American penny magazine and family newspaper and Dwight's American magazine was reissued in 1847. Also reissued in monthly compilations.
