- The "striped pig" refers to an incident at a Dedham, Mass. muster in 1838. Tickets, entitling the holder to a viewing of a painted pig and a "free" drink, were sold, thus circumventing a Massachusetts liquor law forbidding the sale of alcohol in quantities smaller than fifteen gallons. Cf. Tatham, David. The lure of the striped pig, 1973, p. 64.
- One of two rival periodicals, established shortly after the Dedham incident. This one has volume numbering and date, and no place of publication. Masthead illustration shows a man with drinking glass, jumping a striped pig over a 15 gal. barrel, with pyramids and a palm tree in the background.
