Summary:
This manuscript is an account book for a small business, with entries for expenses written over time as they occurred. The name of the proprietor taken from an inscription of "Mr. | B. Milgram | Brooklyn | 138 Powell st. NY." (f. 9r). Names are written often in shorthand (such as "the groom R. Mendel" (f. 17r)) but otherwise completely, and detailing an amount they owe; all names are in Hebrew, except for "8 Abrams" (f. 50v). Most amounts are listed in cents (spelled סענט). Each line consists of a name and an amount, with the amount in either the right or left margin. Names are not always fully written out but include Kurland, Shenker, Erlich, Slutsker, and Moseiwitch. Written in a late East-European Ashkenazic cursive hand. Bound in original brown leather binding with pockets intact, with what appears to be an ink blotter on either board. Four loops on the fore-edge, with two on each cover, to hold a writing implement and hold the covers closed.
