Summary:

Between 1950 and 1960, three constitutions were introduced in Kenya, reflecting changing goals and perceptions associated with de-colonization. This book explains the processes of constitution making involved in two of those constitutions: the Lyttleton and the Lenox-Boyd constitutions. Maxon (history, West Virginia U.) argues that although the constitutions were supposed to facilitate the sharing of political power among racially defined groups, the constitutions were framed so as to preserve the dominant European role in Kenya's political order, and not as a means of engineering a smooth transition to African majority rule. The book draws on newspaper articles, archival sources, including British and Kenyan national archives, and especially the papers of Sir Michael Blundell, held at Rhodes House in Oxford.
