- Summary:
- A volume comprising medicinal remedies for a variety of ailments compiled by an unnamed author probably from Lindley, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England spanning the years from 1822 to 1824. Some ailments in the volume include asthma, burns, bruises, corns, coughs, gout, indigestion, inflammation, sprains, and toothaches. There are recipes for balsams, drops, lotions, lozenges, ointments, pills, syrups. Several commercial products such as Barclay's antibilious pills, Carrington's life pills, Ching's lozenges, Church's cough drops, Elephant's milk, and Gowland's lotion. Some of the commercial products have copied critiques of the product indicating it's efficacy and ingredients. For instance under Elephant's milk there is analysis of its true contents. Many of the recipes and comments are attributed to The monthly gazette of health by Dr. Richard Reece. Other recipes are attributed to doctors and friends. There are some recipes for hair products. Included at the end of the volume are recipes for wines such as gooseberry, malt, and red currant. Some leaves in the volume are blank. Label on the inside back cover: Mrs. Shaw's Ladies Seminary, Lindley. Several leaves at the end of the volume have been excised.
