- Summary:
- The computing landscape is ever changing. Today, we increasingly talk about engineering mobile apps that execute on our phones and tablet devices. We engineer our software with increasing focus on its future maintenance. Because of our end-users’ diverse needs, our software systems are highly configurable. All these trends call for changes to our existing software engineering processes. In this volume, we focus on one important software engineering activity, namely software testing. This volume is a compilation of a set of five chapters that study issues of software testing of mobile applications, evolving software, and highly-configurable software. The authors of these chapters are world leaders in their fields of expertise. Together these chapters present, for certain key domains, the state-of-the-art in software testing. The rise in popularity of mobile applications for mobile devices and the growth estimates for this market make mobile application development a strategic business sector. As a variety of new scenarios for mobile devices and applications emerges, users and developers require improved reliability, usability, performance, and security. In such a context, open platforms for mobile application development, such as the Android operating system, are assuming a preponderant role. To satisfy this growing request for high quality applications, developers must devote greater effort and attention to software development processes. In particular, testing and its automation play a strategic part for assuring the quality of applications.
