Summary:
This case, written from the perspective of a student/part-time Uber driver, offers insight into the business model and associated practices and processes of Uber. Like other technology start-ups, Uber operates a successful business based on the on-demand flexible employment model. However, the tide is turning as drivers, who are regarded as partners or contractors, are taking legal actions demanding reclassification and compensation for past misclassification. An assessment of Ubers legal difficulties surrounding its business relationships with its drivers offers insight into this business model, Uber as a company, and the broader business environment in which they operate. Four options are contemplated as a way forward for Uber to avoid possibly debilitating outcomes.
