- Summary:
- The case begins with Singapore's recent attempt to launch a pilot project for smart grid technology, Intelligent Energy System (IES), which comprises of two phrases-infrastructure establishment in phase I (2010-2012) and costumer applications development in phase II (2012-2013) with 4500 customers in various residential, commercial and industrial locations-led by the Singaporean government institution called Energy Market Authority (EMA).Singapore's current electricity system is already one of the most reliable systems in the world, but it continues to invest in critical energy infrastructure ahead of demand to make markets more efficient, open new areas for economic development and strengthen the energy security. These activities form the vision of Singapore as a 'living laboratory' - actively pursuing to cultivate new technologies and enjoy the first mover advantage-and its ambition to be a model of sustainable city. Concluding arguments look at the relevance of the IES, and Singapore's initiatives in general as it pertains to the region and the rest of the world.
