Summary:
ManyFutures, Inc. (MFI), founded in 2000 with the aim of creating a website to facilitate philanthropy around the world, was created as a for-profit company, with investments coming from Whittle, Kuraishi, and other investors. Funds contributed through MFI's website were originally distributed to various projects through an existing foundation, but a new foundation, eventually named the GlobalGiving Foundation (GGF), was created in 2003. GGF became the vehicle through which gifts were distributed, while MFI operated the web technology that enabled individuals to make their contributions. The problems faced by MFI at the time of the economic downturn provide an example of the challenges facing hybrid organizations.
