Summary:
Governance and internal controls are an important part of ensuring that an organization's assets are controlled, its recordkeeping is complete and accurate, and in accordance with the goals and expectations of its stakeholders. Many accounting programs only address these issues in passing as part of one of the financial accounting courses and may not offer a course in internal auditing and control. But governance and internal controls are important subjects for the accounting student as they remain the focus of legislation and interest in light of recent corporate failings and misdeed, and they constitute an important section in the CMA (certified management accountant) exam. Management accounting students in particular not only need to be familiar with the general concepts and theory, but also need to know how those elements are adapted for smaller or nonmainstream organizations. The case describes how Raven's head ranch, a small non-profit organization run mostly by volunteers, leads to a number of questionable expenditures and purchases. Students are asked to think through the governance and control system of the ranch and assess its weaknesses and areas in which it is possible to make improvements.
