Summary:

This case study examines the opportunity structure, ethnic resources, and ethnic strategies influencing ethnic minority businesses in the UK. The case focuses on the experience of a 45-year-old African man named Thomas and his greengrocery shop in the East End of London. Issues around financial constraints, structural inhibitors, competitive pressures, socio-cultural penalties, and personal culpabilities are highlighted. The case highlights Thomas' dilemma in choosing one out of four competing decision points. These include: (1) exiting the business and entering the labour market for full-time employment; (2) keeping the business going, but taking a part-time job to enhance income and relieve financial burden; (3) increase the scope and scale of the business by engaging in transnational entrepreneurship; and (4) fold-up the business and go back to Africa with his family.
