Summary:
Kingfisher Airlines Limited was an airline based in India. Since it began operations in 2005, it reported losses. Kingfisher continued to encounter severe financial issues for many years which eventually led to the shutdown of its operations on 20th October, 2012. During this time, the airline faltered in paying salaries to its employees and this caused a series of problems. The case focuses on the industrial relations issues such as strikes, protests, lockouts, and other incidences of industrial dispute faced by Kingfisher and its impact on the financial performance of the company. The reactions of employees as well as the responses from the management are highlighted. Students will get a clear insight into why events unfolded as they did under the leadership of the protagonist of the story, the flamboyant Chairman of the UB Group and Kingfisher Airlines, Mr. Vijay Mallya.
