Dr. Jennifer Johnstone had just completed her residency in geriatric medicine. With her experience dealing with diverse populations and her basic Spanish skills, Dr. Johnstone was placed with a community hospital in a rural area of Texas with a high Latino population.This case study discusses the impact of cultural differences on the success of medical treatment in different populations. With Dr. Johnstone's experiences, it underscores that cultural competence -- and specifically cultural strategic planning -- is essential to successful healthcare and the success of health care facilities. Dr. Johnstone believes that implementing strategies to achieve Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services standards will improve the overall quality of care.
